Authentic Gecko Hawaii From The 1980's Makes It Into The Stranger Things Season 5 Finale

A Behind The Scenes Conversation and Costume Clues with Stranger Things Costume Designer Amy Parris and Gecko Hawaii CMO, Mark Schwartz

One of the things that’s always set Stranger Things apart is how real it feels. The clothes don’t look styled — they look lived in. That authenticity comes from the creative minds of Duffer Brothers, and Costume Designer Amy Parris -- who has spent years sourcing original 1980's vintage apparel for the show -- and cares deeply about getting it right.

One of many reasons that 1980's & 90's "retro surf style" has made such a triumphant comeback in the past few years is due to the pop culture success of Stranger Things, the decade it takes place in, and the excitement generated from Amy Parris's pitch perfect costuming and attention to detail for seasons 3, 4 & 5.

Prior to the release of Season 5, Amy sat down with Gecko Hawaii's CMO Mark Schwartz to talk about vintage sourcing, fall layers, windbreakers, and how a box of original ’80s Gecko gear found its way into Hawkins, Indiana for the Stranger Things Finale.

On Opening the Boxes of Vintage Gecko

Mark Schwartz:
“You and your team have sourced so much genuine 1980s vintage apparel, which is part of what makes the world of Stranger Things feel so real, relatable, lived in and authentic. Back in 2023/2024, when you were sourcing costumes for the final season, I remember digging deep into the Gecko Vault with our co-founder Derek Sciaqua to find original vintage apparel from the 1980's to send you. If I remember correctly, we sent you 3 or 4 big boxes.

So... my first question is: I know it's been awhile, but do you remember your reaction, or your team's reaction when they opened the boxes we sent and started rifling through items that most people have not seen for over 30 years?”

Amy Parris:
“I mean, it was amazing. People on my team were excited to see all those vintage shirts & windbreakers!

I’m used to seeing authentic vintage, but I was excited by how excited everyone else was! Of course, I remember Gecko from the ’80s, but some of the costumers on the team are much younger — and because Gecko was much more regional early on, more West Coast — and the filming location was Atlanta and the South -- they weren’t familiar with Gecko. But the second they saw it, they loved it!

I'm being 100% honest and sincere -- they absolutely loved it. And I can’t thank you guys enough because at the end of the season, we had tons of stock that we were able to give out to a lot of the crew members -- and I swear all of the Gecko went first.

Everyone was like, ‘Give me that. Give me that.’

I think part of what makes the show feel so lived in is it is authentic. It’s almost all real pieces from the era.”

Gecko in Hawkins

The Classic 1988 "Gecko Multi Windbreaker" appears in a shot by the Hawkins Movie Theater featuring Indiana Jones 3 at the end of the Stranger Things Season 5 Finale.

The Stuff That Almost Made It On Screen

Mark:
“Do you remember any main characters who tried Gecko pieces on but didn’t end up wearing them?”

Amy:
“Yes. There’s a new character, Derek, but the pieces he tried on made him look a little bit older than we wanted.

Originally, I thought the inspiration for his character was more of a bully, a cool guy. And the Duffers were like, ‘Actually, wait till you see what he looks like. He’s very sweet and has a little cherub angel face.’ So we went in a different direction.

But it was cool to try that stuff on him. And he was really excited because he wasn’t familiar with Gecko either. He’s from Chicago.”

Mark:
“That would have been so rad and great if he ended up wearing Gecko -- especially since Derek is the name of our co-founder."

Riding Through Hawkins

At the end of the Stranger Things 5 Finale, we hear "Rockin' Robbins" voice over and see Hawkins being rebuilt -- along with a shot of kids riding bikes. One of these kids is wearing the classic 1989 "Gecko Stitch" t-shirt, and a pair of "Gecko Petro Mint Beach Pants." These are original from '88 & '89, but Gecko re-issued both in 2025 and there are a few still available!

Seven Years Inside the Stranger Things World

Mark:
“How does it feel knowing the creation part of Stranger Things is over, but having to keep everything secret?”

Amy:
“I feel so grateful to have been a part of it. Since I did seasons three, four, and five, that’s almost seven years and a big chunk of my career.”

“To be a part of that for so long and watch these kids grow up, and be part of the community that is Stranger Things, and see how fans react to creative choices — it’s all so cool.”

“It was such a gift to be part of the show and part of that little world.”

“I’m not over it. And I don’t mind when people ask me about it. It was like a dream job.”

Mark:
“Whenever people ask me about Gecko or the ’80s, I suddenly realize I’ve been talking nonstop for ten minutes. And then I wonder, ‘Are they still interested?’ But I guess that’s how you know you love what you do.”

Amy:
“Exactly. I know that feeling.”

Mark:
“Is it hard keeping secrets for that long? Especially when you are really excited about the show and all of the work you've put into it?"

Amy:
“Well, even my dad asked me, ‘Will Eddie be back this season?’ And I was like, ‘Sorry Dad, I can’t tell you.’

I’m really good at keeping secrets.”

Costume Easter Eggs and Costumes as Characters

Mark:
“Are there any 'Easter eggs' in the costumes in season five?”

Amy:
“I can't say anything yet, but, when you’re watching season five, Holly — Mike’s younger sister — has a bigger role, and I think you’ll notice a familiar character in an outfit she ends up in.

That’s kind of all I can say. But, I'm curious, because I know you're a fan of the show -- who do you think I'm talking about?"

Mark:
“I have no clue... but, I always thought that at somepoint, we might see Nancy's friend Barb come back. Am I close?"

Amy:
(Laughing) “Oh, no!”

A Shift to Fall Colors & Apparel

Mark:

"What was the biggest sourcing, or aesthetic challenge you encountered in designing costumes and apparel for Season 5 compared to Season 4?"

Amy:
“The biggest shift for me was designing for fall and winter.

I did summer in season three and spring in season four, so it was nice to go back to how the seasons looked early on.

Seasons one and two did such a beautiful job with jackets and layers.

But sourcing vintage multiples is hard, and finding vintage jackets in multiples is nearly impossible. Jackets and outerwear are more complicated and expensive to build.

The look is a little darker. The palette is more autumnal.

We phased out a lot of white and pastel colors. The rule in the 1980s was still ‘no white after Labor Day.’”

Spot the Gecko

Mark:

"Can you tell us what Gecko pieces ended up in the final season?"

Amy:

“Like I said before, I'm good at keeping secrets." (Laughing)

“You guys sent us some great wind pants and wind jackets. Those were great because we were able to put people in those.

You’ll definitely see some Gecko sprinkled throughout the show, especially in darker teal and green colors.”

And In The End...

At Gecko, we’ve always believed the best pieces already have a story.

We are stoked to have played a little part in a giant pop culture phenomenon. A special thank you to our fans, Stranger Things fans and Amy Parris -- for helping us to play our little part… in a GIANT pop culture phenomenon. You can see a lot of Gecko in the background in the Season 5 Finale episode.
